It's been ages, but I finally have some new pieces in the shop, and more to come too! I'm really excited about the new designs, they are cast in brass, and are nice and solid feeling, one of the things I love about cast jewelry.

Epic Fashion Fail

I hardly watch television. I actually don't even own one. What I do watch, I catch online. And The Rachel Zoe Project is one of my guilty pleasures. I really love her style, chunky jewels, lots of 60's and 70's vintage, stylish boho glam.

So I was pretty excited to hear she was coming out with a line. I was a bit surprised to hear it was through QVC , because Rachel's personal style is super high end and nowhere near the QVC / middle America market, but some really cute things have come out of the H&M and Target designer collaborations, so I was excited to see how this line turned out too.

In a word? Ugh. Awful. Disappointing.

Rachel really sold out. And this is her very FIRST line. You should kind of wait until you've established yourself as a designer before you sell out. She basically designed to the QVC audience, and not to her own fashion savvy audience. Unoriginal designs coupled with poor quality materials and terrible colors equals an epic design fail. I was wondering what all the designers she uses to dress her clients would think about the conflict of interests this would create, but they can breathe easy knowing that they have no competition at all from Rachel Zoe's boring, cheap, uninspired line.

Fall Tie Dye

Yesterday I went shopping for some basic leggings, and discovered very little variety available. There was onyx or coal or ink (aka black), with a gray pair here and there. I wasn't looking for gold lame or fuchsia suede, but maybe some patterns or textures in neutral colors wouldn't kill people to stock!

Anyway we needed some,(my daughter and I) so I got a few pairs in..... black. On the ride home I got the idea that I would tie dye a pair with bleach to add some spice to at least one...

Of course when I got home, I had no rubber bands OR bleach, but these minor details did not stop me, once I have an idea in my head I have to do it right away. So I tied the sections up with some string and used Clorox Clean Up spray in a bottle. The spray bottle turned out to be a stroke of genius, so easy to handle and kept most of the bleach off my hands. And simultaneously cleaned my bathtub which is where I did the work.

The pants came out great! I love the brown on black! I left the bleach on a bit long, maybe 5 minutes, but if you did it for less time it would be more subtle~ It's a great palette for the cooler months, and it was much cleaner and easier to accomplish than tie dye with colors. I'm going to be doing this with lots of things now!

I'm not really wild about cosmetics. I'm a lip gloss and sunscreen gal, and have no interest in fancy moisturizers and shampoos. But there is a product that I really love and use all the time. Chandrika soap. Made in India, it comes in a simple green paper box, and has a great paper insert in both English and Hindi (such a gorgeous script!) and states it will "Ensure your personal charm"! Besides having a kitchy lost in translation feeling, it smells soooooo good. It reminds me of a mix between an incense filled head shop and an earthy health food store~ Its made with pure vegetable oils and has no animal products in it, made in the Ayurvedic method. It's really great for oily skin, but can dry you out a bit if you're not so oily. And it costs 79 cents!

The ingredients are :

Coconut Oil : it nourishes, moisturises and lightens your skin tan.
Wild Ginger : soothes the skin and helps prevent infections and rashes.
Lime Peel Oil : for a refreshing cooling effect and rich, penetrating lather with an astringent action.
Hydnocarpus Oil : helps prevent skin problems, rashes and outbreaks.
Orange Oil : tightens pores, helps prevent pimples and blackheads.
Patchouli and Sandalwood Oil : to cool, refresh and gently perfume your skin.

I tend to fall heavily for a look in my own work when an design really strikes a cord, but its nice to see when my thoughts also end up reflecting what other people are feeling too~ a fashion critical mass.

I love the hard and soft duality of arrowheads. Meant for hunting, these violent and rigid stone points are so graceful and organic in nature and show the imperfect touch of man attempting to make their own life easier with tools~ I also love how people have taken the shape and made it a geometric design element~

Fall Wish List 2009

Right on cue, the weather in NY turned decidedly fall-like on September 1st. After a shorter than normal summer, I was not exactly thrilled, but after a few days of "almost sweater" weather, I've come to terms with what is right around the corner, and decided to make my fall wish list, here it is!

1.Boots
a. Ankle Boots
I've been drooling over these for a few weeks now~ They are the perfect mix of super hot and comfy. I do tons of walking so I've given up on any shoe or boot that hurts, or even LOOKS like it might hurt, which tends to cut down on style too. These handmade boots are IT!~

b. Tall Boots
Frye boots have been around forever and have yet to go out of style. This gorgeous vintage pair
is perfect for crunching leaves!

2.Chunky Sweater
I've been a fan of chunky Cowichan sweaters for ages, they look perfect over jeans and tall boots and are the fall/winter piece that I tend to wear most often. This company has TONS of great handmade sweaters , have a peek! They are a bit pricey, so vintage is a great option too!

3. HUGE rings
a. Metal
Rings are my jewel of choice as the weather gets cooler, they are visible even if you are under layers of clothes, and they glimmer and shine on dreary gray days. The bigger the better, and a girl can never have enough rings! This knot ring in gold is so hot!

b. Sparkle
For a little bling, this titanium druzy quartz ring .

4. Bell bottoms
While skinny jeans and leggings seem to still dominate the fashion world, I'm forever a bell bottoms gal, I love these jeans with the embroidered rainbow!

5. The perfect fall bag!
I actually made this one myself from heavy vintage carpet bag material, completely inspire by Mary Poppins! It's HUGE, just they way I like my bags (vintage ones are darling, but they tend to be really small). It has a hand stitched leather handle and solid brass hardware! That's at least one thing I can cross off my list! I used to make and sell more bags, but they are super time consuming to make (hand stitched leather, etc) and therefor were pretty pricey, but if you have any interest in seeing some, please let me know!

I'd like all of the above and world peace for Fall. Anyone who can make that happen, please leave a comment! (tee hee)

Ankle Boots

Cute little fall ankle boots are on my Fall Wish List (soon to be posted!) but on a tight budget and the weekend fast approaching with a fall chill in the air, I wanted a pair right away.... so I pulled out an old pair of cowboy boots that fit great and are perfectly rock'n'roll distressed, but rarely get worn and got busy with the scissors and thread. I cut off most of the leather upper and curved the shape to make it look less chopped and more intentional. Then I stitched all around the new lower opening and ..voila! Super cute ankle boots for free!

Dolly Dress

I found this amazing vintage doll print dress yesterday at the thrifty, I've never seen anything even close to this unique print, I nearly swooned! I love the little majorette style golden ball buttons up the front, the cute little dress silhouette, and the images of the dolls are SO darling! There are Matryoshka dolls, Kewpie dolls, bathing beauties, some that look porcelian, nurses, fancy ladies, and even a little cowboy!

The dress looked really small to me so I was all set to sell it on Vintage Jones (note the pink Vintage Jones back drop), but this morning, I tried it on just to see... and it fit me PERFECTLY! So after much ado, I've decided to hold onto it, its just too darling and I love it so much! Now.... where to wear it to?

This is the perfect way to use these rather large, rather heavy clasps, by combining them with super soft suede so that it feels great to wear, not bulky. I LOVE to barter!! Whenever a situation presents itself for bartering, I usually jump at the chance! I did my most favorite barter to date with Alexandra from Pipertree ~ Look at this lovely piece she sent me! I adore it to bits and can't wait to rock it!

The rope is hand braided and adjusts up or down, the blue stone is an Aqua Aura crystal point, the white is Quartz crystal point, both of which are wrapped in silver leather~ Its so perfect!

P.S. Thanks so much you guys for all the very sweet comments about the dream catcher! The naming ceremony was lovely and Anisas (Hummingbird) was so darling through out! (I forgot my camera or I'd have posted some pics!)

I am attending a Powhatan Native American naming ceremony tomorrow for a dear friend of mine's 8 month old daughter. Her name will be Hummingbird. My friend asked me to to be one of the sponsors for her sweet girl, and I was so very honoured that I created this dream catcher as a gift to mark the ceremony. Its not so traditional as dream catchers go, but neither is the family, and it sort of flowed as I was in the creation process. I think it represents them well. It's made with white thread that has a bit of silver shimmer, the frame is natural tree branch I bent into a circle and painted white, vintage chandelier drops, a natural white feather I found on a walk, a shell bird fetish (for Hummingbird), and a natural quartz crystal point. Handmade shoes are one of those really hard to come by things in an affordable price range, understandably so. I would imagine they are extremely labor intensive to create, and leather is not the most cost effective material to work in, but there are some GREAT designers in this field, here are a few!

I'm madly in love with Spiro Creations , a handmade shop created by a husband and wife team from Winnipeg. Their gorgeous handmade shoes and boots run from $140-$180 and are so dreamy!

I love these great handmade wooden heeled leather clogs by rabiahhodges !! Gorgeous for summer days or nights!

Dleather always has great handmade earthy leather boots, a flower child's wardrobe staple! Prices range from $45- $200.

This gorgeous heels by frenchenglish are more on the couture side of handmade, stunning!

For the perfect summer sandals, Sandali is the handmade shop to visit! Here are just a few leather sandals you will find in their shop! Prices go from $40-$50

The shoes and boots form Woland and Moon are truly unique and beautiful! They are on the pricey side, but look how amazing they are! Little works of art for your feet!

I adore Victorian Mourning Jewelry, especially the intricately woven hair pieces set under glass in beautifully crafted settings generally made from gold. It seems a bit strange and bit off-putting at first, but its really rather endearing and sentimental after you think about it~

I'm totally crushing on Alexandra from Pipertree !

Well her work anyway, since I don't know her personally. But look at her amazing creations~

I love love love how crazy labor intensive her creations are... (she braids her own ropes!!! and LOOK at the bags she makes!) and love her use of natural materials; leather, crystals, feathers. I even dig her half sleeve tattoo in her images!

She's got an edgy and earthy style and we share a similar aesthetic, so its not surprising that I'm drawn to her work~ (and we both have heart tattoos on our pinkies!)

I love this quote from Pipertree's shop announcement too, it so perfectly describes Alexandra's shop and style.

A new day equals a new obsession for me, this time its double finger rings!

I had always dismissed them as being too masculine and far to similar to brass knuckles, both of which are not exactly soft and pretty, but here are some truly gorgeous double finger rings out there, and they are really feminine and sweet! There is a local store that displays artists work, usually just traditional paintings or photos, but I though I could create a cool artistic piece that would be visually pleasing, like a piece of art, AND work as a display for my designs. I finally came up with a Victorian botanical collection idea. I thought it worked well with all my different natural elements and gave it a cool look, here it is.. what do you think?

I used lace and doilies, butterflies and bugs printed from vintage plates, and my personal favorite, a glass jar with a paper bug inside! I pinned everything on and raised some of the butterflies, which I love, because it gave lots of dimension, like an actual bug collection. I numbered all of my designs and had a list of descriptions mounted below.

Thrift shops are ALWAYS my first stop... I found this beauty at my local shop... (earrings available in my shop)

I love this floppy wool hat from American Apparel , its so chic and very packable for a weekend beach getaway, and it comes in 3 colors! (I bought the brown!)

Faceted Metal

My latest obsession is faceted pewter colored metal... its very old fashioned, but clean and current at the same time. I'm completely a "gold" girl, I almost always prefer it to silver, but this pewter / steely gray is really so appealing to me right now!

Cut steel jewelry was popular in the late 1700's to 1800's. It actually sold at a higher price than gold jewerly because of the enormous cost of making it.

How To Make A Moss Terrarium

Terrariums are little mini environments that grow plants and require very little watering and work and look darling on a window sill to brighten any room!

What you need:
~clear glass lidded jar
~stones
~soil
~charcoal
~moss
~decorations
~spray mist bottle

1. Find your perfect container.
Traditional terrariums are in clear glass lidded containers. Thrift shops usually have lots of great choices, if you can find a sweet vintage apothecary jar or a lidded Ball jar, they work great for terrariums. Just be sure its not too small, you need room for a layer of stones, dirt, moss, and any decorations you want to add, so keep that in mind when finding your lidded glass jar.

2. Layer of stones.
Since your terrarium won't have any drainage, you have to great a place for excess moisture to drain away from the roots do they aren't stilling in water. You should have a mix of small and slightly larger stones to ensure good drainage. About 1 inch of rocks, give or take, at the bottoms should be good. I found mine at the beach, but you can buy gravel from a garden shop too.

3. Soil
Its best to use potting soil from a garden shop mixed with a little bit of gardening charcoal sprinkled in which acts as a purifier to prevent bacteria from growing, but I've also used the dirt from the ground under the moss I've dug, it seems to work fine too (you just have to be sure there are no buggies in it!). The soil you use should be moist before you put it in, if its not, add some water into your soil charcoal mix before you put it into the jar. Layer in the soil into the container.

4. Moss
To find your moss, you need to scout around your yard, or park, or woods to find a little patch of moss. Its usually is moist, semi-shaded areas. Use a gardening shovel to dig your little patch of moss up, it usually comes up pretty easily and some soil stays attached to the bottom. Fit it into your jar, pushing it down to your soil layer snugly and give it a bit of water from your mist bottle.

5. Decorate
Now add any sweet little decorations you'd like! I love little mushrooms and woodland animals, but you could add a tiny house, or little Buddha, anything you like! Just keep in mind that it stays rather moist inside your terrarium, so ceramic, glass, or plastic is the way to go, wood or other porous materials will get moldy after time!

Its important to keep your terrarium in indirect sunlight and to not to over water, just once every 2/3 weeks. If you are not sure when to water, just check the soil, it should be moist and it should not get dried out, but there should not really be much standing water at the rock level.

The red and white mushroom called Amanita Muscaria is what I think of when toadstools come to mind, they are everywhere in pop culture these days, and I'm personally enamored by them... I'm even working on an upholstered stool in its likeness... (pics coming soon)

Look Book

I just created a new look book of my latest styles! Look how cute!
Every year or so I create a new version of my book with the same parameters but with a fresh style and send it out to stores and magazines to get new accounts and hopefully some press!

One of the new things I used on this book was a word collage from Wordle
as a modern and fun way to create a business description... if you haven't tried it, you have to!

The whole look book is pretty simple to create, and looks pretty impressive for minimal effort! I use photoshop to create the images and text, the book is 5 inches by 5 inches (about the size of a CD), I print it on card stock from my computer, and use a paper cutter and hole punch and brass brads to bind it.

Even if you don't send it out to stores, its fun to make one for yourself and carry it around if anyone asks you about your work!

Feather Dreams

I keep dreaming about feathers, Blue Jay Feathers in particular.
They are so gorgeous, in the summertime I find a few of these fallen treasures in my yard or on walks.

I found out recently that these feathers are not really blue when magnified...Light reflected from a blue jay's feather reveals that the coloration is not due to pigmentation but to refraction. The space between the feathers is black and when illuminated from behind absorbs rather than transmits light.

Feather Dream Meaning

Psychological Meaning: Feathers can represent a gift that expresses your desire to show warmth and tenderness to someone close to you. A feather floating in the air may show your desire to ascend to higher spiritual knowledge or intellectual ambition. The lightness of a feather also implies light heartedness and enjoying the good things in life. You may benefit if you surrender for a while to the benevolent winds of fortune: go with the flow.

Mystical Meaning: Many cultures, such as the Incas and Native Americans, used feathered head-dresses to represent spiritual authority and wisdom.

Have you guys seen these?
Levi's has re-issued some older styles of jeans... I'm HOT for these 1974 bell bottoms ! How great are they? The only thing not so good about these is that they have spandex, I don't like jeans with spandex, they tend not last as long amd lose their shape over time. I love 100% heavy plain old cotton jeans which are VERY hard to find these days!

I found these amazing brand new vintage hand towels yesterday! And they still have their stickers on!

They are all 100% linen, they measure 17" x 30", with the greatest printed images, some are so 70's with their crazy colors, but some are very modern looking even though they are all vintage deastock. I think they would make really unique housewarming gifts...

My favorite is the butterfly one!

So we just got back from the BUST craftacular .... whew. It was tons of work, there where a few disasters we averted along the way, but we made it there in one piece and it was great! It was SO busy, and I forgot to take pics till it swamped, and hard to get a good booth shot...

My sweet wonderful husband Robert pretty much made it all happen, driving, lugging, keeping me calm when I had 5 minutes to set up before the doors opened (being late was one of the disasters), along with my mom who took charge of my 3 year old (who was ALSO the most well behaved darling EVER!) YEY for a supportive family!

I didn't get a chance to look at all the other 199 great vendors there, but I got to see some friends, and it seemed like it was a great show for vendors and customers alike!

I love creating things... but I've been struggling with storage and keeping organized...
So I've been looking for something for ages that has lots of small compartments so my little trinkets and tools don't end up in a messy pile!

I found the BEST piece to store my things at the amazing, truely unreal estate sale... I could have bought so much more too... but I tried to stick to items that pertain to my business...

Winter Lace

Maybe because it is so delicate and looks like snowflakes, or could it be that Stevie Nicks was partial to lace, and did so much "snow" herself?
Or because I think of Victorian ladies sitting by the fireplace tatting, but either way, lace and winter go hand in hand for me.

I'm loving lace as the weather is getting cool and crisp... and I've been inspired to get out my vintage collection of frilly lacy bits and start creating things with them... I've got lots of ideas of what to make... I'll post some pictures of finished things soon!

I'm leaning towards 70's Victorian, creamy white, clear stones, white feathers, brassy bits, very feminine and pretty, but earthy and funky all the same... after all, I'm a hippie at heart!

Identity by Design

This is pretty wild... I just posted about learning to bead and on the NY Times Art and Design section today is an article about tribal beaded dresses! My little attempts pale in comparision, look at how stunning these are!

There is a show at the National Museum of the American Indian
in NY called "Identity by Design". I'm hoping to get there to see it!

I'm always finding new crafts that interest me and that I want to learn... my latest interest is beaded rosettes... hand stitched glass beads onto leather.

I found these instructions in my vintage craft book library...

They are so pretty and unbelievably time consuming because each tiny bead is individually stitched down, but I love the splash of color they can add to anything... here is a few things I've done so far with rosettes...

I think my next endeavor will be a beading loom to make woven beaded things!

Eagle Feathers

Eagle feathers are a sacred symbol in Native American culture. The are an integral part of religious ceremonies and are used to mark monumental achievements in life.
Because of the endangered status of eagles in the US and the spiritual importance of the feathers, you must have a permit to own any.

The type of feather that people have come to associate with "eagle feather" (dark tipped and white on the bottom) is from an immature golden eagle.

I made these eagle feather earrings from leather and hand cut and inked them to resemble the sacred symbol of bravery and leadership. I think they came out pretty nice!

While September in NY is usually really nice, still mostly summery, I can't help but to think of cooler fall days ahead and how to look cute!

I have no idea what the NY fashion shows are showing... I've always sort of marched to my own beat, but Native American inspired and the 60's counterculture are usually where my tastes lie these days, and there is so much to draw from.

I just bought this coat on ebay and I'm counting the minutes till it gets here...

Next up... the quest for the perfect fall boots.....stay tuned!

The Year of the Baby Shower...

A few years ago ALL of my friends were getting married... in one summer we went to 5 million weddings... that was a tricky summer... new outfits for ever one (most of the same people where at all the weddings so repeats were out of the question) cool and different gifts for each one.... I was glad when fall rolled around that year...

Now this year has a new twist... its the year of the baby shower.... so far I have been to 5...
Baby showers are a bit different, smaller, more intimate, and simpler... sort of...
Unless you make bags (like I do) and everyone expects a killer diaper bag and that is super unique and suits the new mama... and that doesn't look like a diaper bag so you can keep using it after the diapers...
Since they are lots of work, I always end up procrastinating and make the bag the day before... but I made my favorite diaper bag to date for this one!

This great hippie embroidered cotton western shirt made in India (it very Native Funk and Flash... my husband put dibs in on this one, but we'll see!)

This sweet little vintage strawberry calico fabric so darling for linings or little girls things or patchwork...

And this PRISTINE vintage shag rug ! I have it listed on Etsy already.... I want to have a fondue party looking at this one!

COWICHAN sweaters

My latest obsession are these great chunky vintage sweaters...
The Cowichan Tribal First Nation is located in and around Duncan, British Columbia.

Cowichan sweaters are heavy-wool knit animal and geometric patterns made by the Cowichan people. They are still made today, but true to my nature, the vintage ones appeal to me the most!

I love how warm and cuddly these sweaters are, I love the bold and graphic images used on these sweaters, and I love that they are handmade. What a fun fall / early winter coat these make with some skinny jeans and tall boots!

There are some DARLING little childrens sweater too, I'm looking for one for my girl as well!

I didn't realize till I became obsessed with these sweaters that the Dude from the Big Leboswski (one of my favorite movies) rocked these as well!

Now... which one to get?

Its called vintage Jones ! The name comes from a synonym for addiction, because I adore vintage things and can not live with out them. Invariably, vintage things (other than handmade things today) were made better, designed better, and appeal to my soul! This way I get my vintage fix and get to share my pretty things with all of you too! Its highly currated so each piece is great on its own, no filler! I'm trying to have things for guys stocked as well!
